The Prize is open to poets who were born in Africa, or who are nationals of an African country, or whose parents are African. It is for ten poems exactly in order to encourage serious poets. These poems may, however, have already been published. Only poets who have not yet had a full-length poetry book published are eligible. Poets who have self-published poetry books or had chapbooks and pamphlets published are allowed to submit for this prize

2). An annual literature prize awarded to the writer of an African short story

The Caine Prize for African Writing is a literature prize awarded to an African writer of a short story published in English. The prize was launched in 2000 to encourage and highlight the richness and diversity of African writing by bringing it to a wider audience internationally. The focus on the short story reflects the contemporary development of the African story-telling tradition.

3). Africa Book Club Short Story Competition

This competition has temporarily been suspended. Africa Book Club is currently seeking sponsors for this competition.

Africa Book Club Short Reads Competition – monthly short story writing competition. Welcomes entries from writers across the continent and the Diaspora, doesn’t accept stories from non-African nationals provided the stories are contextually set in Africa. Considers any short story that has not appeared in another print or electronic publication, the goal for this competition, in line with Africa Book Clubs’ mission to promote African literature and increase knowledge of Africa through supporting creative writing. For writers, this is a platform to showcase your work, experiment, and be discovered.

About the Competition

The Africa Book Club Short Reads Competition features short stories drawn from contributors across the African continent. Africa Book Club accept unpublished fiction and creative non-fiction submissions, not exceeding 3,500 words, and whose setting and context are primarily set in Africa, or written by African authors.
Welcomes entries that celebrate Africa’s diversity and rich story telling traditions – anything from fiction and non-fiction stories that reflect life on the continent to childhood memoirs and travel stories.

Monthly winners will receive a cash prize of $100 from the Africa Book Club bookstore. In addition to the monthly winner’s prize, there will be up to 3 runners-up prizes of $25 each. Winning stories will feature on the Africa Book Club under a special “Short Reads” section. In addition, the top 30 stories from all submissions received in the twelve months prior to July of every year, will be considered for our annual short story anthology, published in the fall.

Unlike many other contests, we take no entry fees. This is because we want to encourage all eligible writers out there to submit their work for consideration.

The firstwriter.com International Short Story Contest accepts short stories from around the world. A first prize of £200 is on offer, as well as the possibility of publication in
firstwriter.magazine for runners up.
