12. Brooklyn Non-Fiction Prize
Presented by the Brooklyn Film & Arts Festival, this annual prize awards $500 cash for “the best Brooklyn-focused non-fiction essay which is set in Brooklyn and is about Brooklyn and/or Brooklyn people/characters.” (So it’s Brooklyn-centric, if you haven’t picked up on that yet.)
Submissions should be four to 10 pages (up to 2,500 words), and five authors will be chosen to read and discuss their submissions at the annual December event.
Deadline: Annually in mid-November.

Commonwealth Short Story Prize
aims to bring stories from new and emerging voices, often from countries with little or no publishing infrastructure, to the attention of an international audience. Open to citizens of the 53 Commonwealth countries, the prize covers the five Commonwealth regions: Africa, Asia, Canada and Europe, Caribbean and Pacific. One winner will be selected from each region, with one regional winner to be selected as the overall winner. The overall winner of the Commonwealth Short Story Prize will receive £5000 (US$6250) and the remaining four regional winners receive £2500. Entries for the 2018 Commonwealth Short Story Prize close on 1 November.

John Steinbeck Short Story Award
is one of three prizes offered by Reed Magazine. This award is for a work of fiction up to 5000 words. The winner of the John Steinbeck Short Story Award receives a cash prize of US$1000 and all entries are considered for publication. Entries open on 1 June and close 1 November.

CAFE WRITERS OPEN POETRY COMPETITION 2017

The Norfolk Prize of £100 is awarded to the best poem from a permanent Norfolk resident not winning another prize. Maximum of 40 lines (excluding title) on one side of A4. The prize is open to anyone other than Café Writers’ committee members. Entries must be entirely the work of the entrant and must never have been published,self-published, published on any website or broadcast.

STRINGYBARK MALICIOUS MYSTERIES SHORT STORY AWARD

THE SHARED DREAM CHAPBOOK CONTEST

THE TWO SYLVIAS PRESS 2017 WILDER SERIES POETRY BOOK PRIZE

The Wilder Series Book Prize is open to women over 50 years of age (established or emerging poets) and includes a $1,000 prize, publication by Two Sylvias Press, 20 copies of the winning book, and a vintage, art nouveau pendant. Women submitting manuscripts may be poets with one or more previously published chapbooks/books or poets without any prior chapbook/book publications. Length: 60-100 pages of poems.

Published books include self-published books with ISBN numbers. Those who have published books in other genres besides fiction remain eligible.
